This edition of Singapore Nautilus looks at the issue of gender diversity in Maritime Singapore and the important role that women play. Kicking off on April 6, the annual Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) saw nine exciting days of industry events, networking receptions and public outreach activities attended by more than 50,000 participants from over 30 countries. Singapore commemorates its bicentennial in 2019, and this issue focuses on the nation’s maritime journey from the past to the present, with an eye to the future. The feature story highlights Singapore’s development from a trading post in the 14th century to a global maritime hub, as well as efforts by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore to help Singapore remain a leading and vital node in the global maritime network. In keeping with the theme, the Commentary section saw David Chin, former Executive Director of the Singapore Maritime Foundation sharing three areas of the maritime industry that have seen significant improvements through the years. The issue also included COSCO SHIPPING (South East Asia)’s President Gu Jingsong expounding on the factors that make Singapore an attractive regional headquarters as well as Shipowners’ Club’s Singapore branch Chief Executive David Heaselden imparting his thoughts on the club’s role in providing protection and indemnity for its members.

This issue of Singapore Nautilus takes a look at how the shipping industry is prepared for growth despite world-wide challenges. And Masafumi Kuroki, Executive Director of the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP) Information Sharing Centre (ISC) emphasises the need for multilateral sharing of information to combat piracy and sea robbery.

As the world's top bunkering port, Singapore has always taken the lead in improving standards within the industry.
