ONE-HIT WONDERS “STAY”

MAURICE WILLIAMS’ “STAY” celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2020, his sole Top 40 hit as a singer, which reached No. 1 in November 1960 by Maurice Williams and The Zodiacs. In the prior decade, Maurice had been a member of the R&B group The Gladiolas, with the doo-wop song “Little Darlin’,” which was successfully covered by the Canadian doo-wop quartet The Diamonds, reaching No. 2.

IN MEMORIAM - Leslie West

Ten months before Mountain’s Top 40 debut with the powerful “Mississippi Queen,” the band performed “For Yasgur’s Farm” and eight more songs at Woodstock. In our 2009 Woodstock 40th anniversary interview article, guitarist and vocalist Leslie West told Goldmine, “We were performing at the Fillmore West and Winterland in California, heard about what was going on back east, and knew we were going to it. We had to rent our own helicopter, because there was no way we were getting upstate in New York with the freeway closed. I almost fell out of the helicopter when I saw all those people. All of a sudden, in the middle of nowhere, you saw a city. It was something else. I was really nervous. When I did my guitar solo, it sounded pretty loud.

WAX CONTINUE TO HEAT THINGS UP

BY MOST people’s reckoning, Wax (not be confused with the Andrew Gold/Graham Gouldman group of the same name) could be considered a decidedly obscure ensemble, having little to show for their three years of activity, from 1969 to 1971. Yet given the talent they nurtured early on, that claim could be considered overstated.

A CHANCE ENCOUNTER WITH LEAPY LEE

On vacation on the Costa del Sol in Spain, I happened across an English language newspaper named The Euro Weekly News. There was an article signed by Leapy Lee. I wondered, “How many Leapy Lees can there be in this world?” An email address was attached. I contacted him and indeed, it was the British singer of “Little Arrows” fame. “Little Arrows,” an international country rock hit in 1968, made it to No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 and sold three million copies worldwide. I set out to find what Leapy Lee has been doing since 1968.

AC/DC: Powering Up!

AC/DC’s vitality is off the charts when it comes to a band approaching their sixth decade. Power Up, AC/DC’s 17th studio album, is proof of that vitality. Front-and-center lead guitarist Angus Young fortifies the group though his undeniable spark and iconic stage image. He admits, however, that it was his brother Malcolm who had led AC/DC throughout the decades with a strong determination as well as solid guitar rhythm.
