I have just realized that my job is strange, and even frightening, to various friends. In various conversations, I discovered that being the EIC of an animal magazine brings experiences few other editors share.

For one, I know of few other editors in-chief who are wondering if they can clone and insure their managing editors (hello Jeff!) just in case something bites or eats him. Without him, this magazine would not even be here. So when I learned that he allowed a tarantula with level 3 venom to climb down his bare back “so it wouldn’t get hurt or frightened,” you can understand why I had to go sit down and do some deep breathing—especially since I know he has severe asthma!
