August is Diaster Preparedness Month, although of course, disasters can happen at any time. What do cat fanciers need to know in order to keep their furry ones safe? Candilee Jackson helps us all to make a disaster plan!
As we prepare for summer, pool parties, camping, vacation or stay-cation, it’s important to remember, regardless of where we live with our cats, Mother Nature has plans for us—whether we like them or not! For those along the west coast of the US, summer brings thunderstorms which often lead to lightning-caused forest and brush fires. In the Gulf shore area and east coast, summer can bring hurricanes, torrential rains and resulting floods. The Midwest states are prime candidates for tornados and snow-melt flooding, while the arid western states struggle with summer’s high temperatures. While the news is full of stories about how these events affect people, we must remember that our animals are part of the equation as well. As their guardians, we should make preparations for their health and well-being during these seasonal events and summer trips away from home.
Finding a Vet When Away From Home
One of the most worrisome experiences for any pet owner is to find yourself in desperate need of veterinary assistance while in unfamiliar territory. However, in a world where computers are available in hotel lobbies, on a smart phone or smart watch, the key to finding an appropriate vet is virtually at your fingertips.
What to Look For
1. Look for vet hospitals which are American Animal Hospital Association accredited using healthypet.com
2. Visit abvp.com and click on Find an Animal Specialist for a vet certified by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP).

\"The Cat Fancy Alphabet\" is a new feature in Cat Talk. It highlights various terms and aspects of the cat fancy, educating fanciers new and old about our hobby.
UP CLOSE AND Purr-sonal
If there is one person, or even just a name, that anyone in CFA (Cat Fancier Association) knows, it would have to be Allene Tartaglia. It might be from her involvement with most aspects of the operations of CFA in her position of executive director. Or perhaps from her deep involvement with both the CFA Annual meeting and/or the International Show. Cat Talk thought it was time to learn more about one of the most key people in CFA.
Vision and Hearing Dysfunctions in Senior Cats
Just as people are challenged by having deficiencies with vision and hearing over time, so are senior cats. In senior cats, pet owners may notice their cats are no longer responding to them in the same way; however, it may be difficult to figure out.
Senior Cats and House Soiling

Alternative Arthritis Treatments for Cats
Just like humans, cats can experience arthritis. About 90% of cats over the age of 10 years experience osteoarthritis (OA) in at least one joint.1 It is a complex condition involving inflammation and degeneration of one or more joints and is sometimes referred to as degenerative joint disease (DJD). Cats with OA experience pain and inflammation in various joints that interfere with daily activities.
