Medical knowledge in human and veterinary fields has progressed by leaps and bounds during this century. We now know that fat is a killer.
In the veterinary field, this is also true and a fat dog is an unhealthy dog. As dogs get older and they tend to get a middle-age spread, it is important for their owners to realise this and to see that their diet and exercise is maintained at a sensible level to keep them from putting on too much weight, which can affect their heart and overall health.
As far as exercise goes, the old dog should have just as much exercise as he ever had, but sudden strain or violent exercise should be avoided.
Digestion deteriorates as a dog becomes older and it may be necessary to take more care and feed a special diet to your old man or lady. The local veterinarian is the ideal person to advise on what is best for each individual dog, but common sense plays a large part in feeding methods.
