Proposed tariffs on Irish imports to the UK was one of the main topics of discussion at the Navigating Global Trade Conference hosted by the Irish Farmers Journal in Dublin, Ireland, in the second week of March.
European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Phil Hogan, said the Irish agrifood industry, particularly the beef sector, would be hardest hit by such tariffs.
Hogan stressed, however, that the implementation of tariffs by the UK on Irish imports would be met with fierce resistant by the EU as a trading bloc.
“We need to stay calm and not react to the UK’s tariff statement published [recently]. This was a political stunt, pure and simple, designed to change the news cycle in the UK and weaken the unity of the EU 26 in relation to the Irish backstop.
