A call has been issued for foresters and concerned citizens to keep an eye out for specimens of the shell lerp psyllid (Spondyliaspis spp.) and the eucalyptus gall wasp (Ophelimus maskelli), and to urgently notify forestry scientists if any are spotted.
Izette Greyling, a forest entomology extension officer with the Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute (FABI), said that early detection of these potential pests in new areas would greatly assist in monitoring their spread and developing appropriate management strategies for them.
Greyling said that the shell lerp psyllid was a sap-sucking insect whose presence in South Africa was first reported in 2014 in the Pretoria area.
