FEI Cracks Down On Injections At Shows

Most injections are being outlawed at FEI competitions

HORSES will no longer be allowed to be injected on the day they are competing at FEI events from 1 January next year, with some specific exceptions.

The new rule was approved at the FEI general assembly (18-21 November), with the exception of classes starting at 6pm or later where horses may be treated by injection until 10am that day.

In the event of an emergency or ongoing treatment, horses may also be treated with injectable controlled medication substances or antibiotics on the day they are competing.

VET Andrew Bathe, who sits on the British Equestrian Veterinary Association’s (BEVA) equestrian sports committee, said the change “seems a sensible amendment to the rules”, which BEVA supports.
