Britain’s pony event riders return home with three medals
GEORGINA HERRLING and SF Detroit were in imperious form, leading from start to finish to win individual gold. Teammate Saffie Osborne and Lord and Lady Blyth’s Little Indian Feather made it a one-two for Great Britain, while the Charles Owen sponsored British team claimed the silver medal behind France. Ireland took bronze.
“What we’ve achieved hasn’t sunk in yet, it was a dream week,” said Georgina, who has been riding the eight-year-old stallion for 18 months. “We were eliminated in the showjumping in our first novice event last year so it’s incredible how far we’ve come.”
Georgina still describes the showjumping as their least confident phase, but the pair showed no sign of weakness as they produced a clear round under pressure — less than one fence separated the top five after the cross-country — to secure the individual title.
“I tried not to think about what was at stake for me, I just focused on doing the right things for the team,” said the 14-year-old, who is based with Austin O’Connor at Attington Stud.
