The FEI is examining its existing protocols for possible safety improvements
The federation said the review was not based on any particular incident, but that the procedure was being re-examined in case safety improvements could be made.
“Horses are unpredictable and incidents can happen at prize-giving ceremonies,” an FEI spokesman told H&H. “By re-examining protocols we can identify how simple changes could improve the safety of the individuals involved.”
Some have called for unmounted prize-givings to remove horses from the equation, while others have suggested rules to protect grooms from injury.
Under FEI rules, helmets must be worn in showjumping and eventing competitions, and it is recommended for dressage. But in prize-givings competitors often remove their hats.
Groom Robbie Sanderson was injured at the Rio Olympics during the prize-giving for the team dressage competition.
