No longer ‘mongrels’ of the moor, research shows that Dartmoor hill ponies are genetically unique
DARTMOOR hill ponies are a distinct type and “worthy of protection”, it has been found.
Preliminary results from an Aberystwyth University study show the ponies have rare genetic signatures not seen in the Dartmoor pony, the other breed linked to the region, or any other native pony in the UK.
“We’ve analysed the DNA from Dartmoor hill ponies and found they are one distinct type,” said Matt Hegarty, who carried out the research. “They have rare genetic signatures not seen in the Dartmoor pony and are genetically quite distinct from them, which may be linked to their ability to thrive in the harsh upland environment.
