As love-hate relationships in families go, we often face a familiar situation with our furry family members. While sometimes it may feel like your cat scratches your furniture or carpet to upset you, they’re actually scratching to clean the exterior sheath of their nails, remove cuticles and to sharpen their claws — think of it as a feline manicure!

Despite efforts at curbing your cat’s destructive scratching, attempting to stop a cat from scratching and climbing is a nearly impossible task. Yet, there’s a lot that you can do to protect your furniture, redirect your cat’s behaviour and keep your cat healthy and happy.

You will achieve nothing in making your feline not scratch your table legs or the arm of your love seat if you don’t provide an alternative for it. An appropriate scratching surface for a cat has a number of essential characteristics but most importantly, it’s weight.
