Emotional Reactions
The varied and vast landscape is one that inspires many artists to reflect and respond, including Maryland-based Jill Basham who has created a new exhibition of paintings that highlight her emotional and visceral reactions. The pieces in the show—her first solo exhibition at South Street Art Gallery in Easton, Maryland—will mainly be studio works done from memory with a few plein air paintings added in.
“I am typically not even referencing a study, but using my memory of the place to paint something that is really rooted in my emotional response to it,” she says, adding that the works are of scenes from all times of day and every season. “A lot of them are unified by the atmospheric quality to them, and oftentimes they are expansive views. I appreciate the distance. Also, I’m drawn to skies and water.”
