10 Minutes With Sarah Mcintyre

You’re currently writer-illustrator in residence for reading charity the Book Trust. What does this involve?

It’s not all that different from my regular blogging, except the Book Trust bigs it up, which is great. I usually blog more erratically but the commission makes me write regularly about the process of making pictures and storytelling. The charity also invites me to events, so I get to meet my illustration heroes, such as Judith Kerr and Raymond Briggs.

You do lots of video tuition and activities to get children drawing and telling stories. Do you think it’s important that young people are creative?

Yes. But I think it’s just as important to help parents, teachers and older siblings understand how they can inspire kids. It can be as simple as having lots of paper and materials to hand. When children see grown-ups drawing and having fun with pictures, they are much more likely to jump in, too. Sometimes, it is also helpful to show adults simpler ways of drawing and visual storytelling that don’t make them feel they have to beat themselves up over every slip of the pencil. Mistakes can be inspiring.
