1 HER SAME-SEX NUDE SHOCKED CRITICS
Claude Phillips of The Telegraph described Dame Laura Knight’s Self-portrait as “dangerously close to vulgarity” when it was exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery’s International Society show in April 1913. In the image, she is painting a nude female model – friend and artist Ella Naper – challenging the conventional heterosexual hierarchy of the male artist/ female model relationship. Self-portrait is now considered a major work in the history of female self-portraiture.
