The advantages of glassfibre when it comes to specialist vehicle construction are numerous, although not everyone is a fan. Some of the terms heard over the years have been less than complimentary, with Plastic Pig – a nickname still used by many when describing any three-wheeled Reliant – being perhaps the most derogatory of all. But while it’s true that Reliant and arch rival Bond employed glassfibre on their economy cars from the ’Sixties onwards (giving ‘plastic’ bodywork a somewhat dubious image in the eyes of some buyers), other manufacturers used the material on distinctly upmarket models.
