The estimated annual energy savings and estimated reduction in greenhouse gases (GHG) are at 32.84 bn kWh (billion kilowatt hour) and 26.6 million tons (mt) Co2 per year, respectively, Piyush Goyal, Minister of State for Coal, Power, New and Renewable Energy and Mines, recently said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.
“On account of the distribution of LED bulbs under the Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (Ujala) scheme and installation of LED streetlights under the Street Lighting National Programme (SLNP) by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), the estimated annual energy savings and estimated reduction in greenhouse gases are 32.84 bn kWh with avoided peak demand of 6,575 megawatts (MW) and GHG emission reduction of 26.6 mt in Co2 per year, respectively,” the minister said.
In addition, there are energy savings and reduction in greenhouse gases on account of sale of large quantities of LED bulbs by the private sector suppliers, the minister said.
Further, Goyal informed that as on August 1, 2017, over 25.28 crore smart and energy- efficient LED bulbs have been distributed in 36 states/Union Territories.
Meanwhile, Energy Efficiency Services (EESL), under the Ministry of Power, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with oil marketing companies (OMCs) under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas for distribution of energy efficient appliances under the flagship Unnat Jeevan by Affordable LEDs and appliances for All (UJALA) scheme, said an official release.
The MoUs were signed with Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) in the presence of Piyush Goyal, Minister of State (IC) for Power, Coal, New & Renewable Energy and Mines, and Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of State (IC) for Petroleum and Natural Gas.

SCCL's coal production up 69% in May
After putting up a dismal performance last year, Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) has started the new fiscal on a high note. Coal production by SCCL in May 2021 surged to 5.44 million tons (mt), about 68.56 percent higher than 3.23 mt achieved in the same month last year, according to (provisional) data released by the company.
