While manufacturing has not been India’s strength in the past, things seem to be changing for the better over the past few years. Vishal Deoarshi, director and co-founder of VD Intellysis, a new player in the domestic SMT manufacturing domain, speaks to Baishakhi Dutta of the EFY Group. The conversation covers the rationale behind the strategic move into the SMT space and the company’s business plans to stay strong in the market. Excerpts follow...
EB: What category of equipment do you manufacture?
Right now, we manufacture LCD, LED, laptop and mobile repair equipment and recently, we have started manufacturing SMT equipment.
EB: What are the other existing product lines? Do you see them as separate business entities?
Apart from SMT equipment, we are manufacturing LCD/LED repair equipment, which include ACF bonding machines (brands like VD 480/580/680 PS), laser LCD repair machines, lamination/ de-lamination machines and their accessories. Recently, we have started manufacturing BGA rework stations (brands like VD 5860 and VD 6200). We have also been manufacturing solder paste for the last two years. We don’t see these as different business entities, though they address different domains.
EB: How are you planning your distribution channel—by yourself or with distribution partners? If it is the latter, what are your selection criteria?
We are still in the process of building distribution channels. We plan to work with distributors for both the domestic as well as international markets. We are planning to have a pan-India service and support team for our products. For the domestic market, we will be looking for distributor partners who have prior exposure to SMT machines. Those who are in the market will be preferable.
EB: In the SMT manufacturing domain, do you have any long-term product portfolio expansion plans?
In the SMT manufacturing domain, we are already manufacturing reflow ovens (both three-zone and six-zone options). Very soon we will start manufacturing SMT wave soldering machines and stencil printers too. Our R&D on SMT machines is in the advanced stage. We have already made a prototype of a particular model and mass production will begin in a couple of months.
EB: Are your products 100 per cent Made in India or are any components imported?
