“Women empowerment is a hollow space unless you have economic independence“
Masooma Rizvi, the name behind the redesign of New Delhi’s Rashtrapati Bhavan’s State Dining, The Manekshaw Centre, and The Pravasi Bharatiya Kendra, and is known for her ability to shape any space into one that is elegant and awe-inspiring while retaining its core essence.
Masooma Rizvi’s day begins when most of ours ends - the Managing Director and creative head of Belita Design Solutions says that her work starts post 9 p.m. when the household is settling down for the night. Then it’s just her, a mug of coffee, her giant Mac and the moon outside. This, she says, is one of the best things about her job — that there’s no ‘typical’ workday. The fact that she didn’t quite believe in the need for a 9-to-5 work day led her to start her own company after working for a decade.
We hope that you enjoy reading the journey of a woman who has redefined designing into a substantial form of creation for this generation!
Take us through the beautiful journey that you have travelled so far?
My journey has been a simple one. I always knew, I wanted to be educated to the maximum that I could be! It’s no surprise that I’m doing my PhD now!
When I was a child there used to be some furniture or interior exhibition in December which I loved going to, my grandmother got me a beautiful doll house from there with the furniture and I loved it! I used to constantly rearrange the furniture, pin the curtains, paint the cupboards and anything and everything to redo the house. And eventually, I ventured into my own, or my grandmothers own backyard so to say and began playing around with our own house. I must say Kudos to my grandmother for letting me do so and give a free hand.
