A historical Belgian pen shop holds everything a pen lover needs.
At one time, the Belgian city of Ghent (Gent inDutch, Gand in French) was one of the most important commercial and cultural hubs in Europe. What started as an abbey site chosen by St. Amandus at the confluence of the river Lys and the river Scheldt grew to be bigger than London. Ghent is known for its long history, extensive culinary scene, and a plethora of quaint beer houses. Walking around the city today, it is easy to tour Ghent’s multiple market squares (56 to be exact), one of which—the Groentenmarkt (Vegetable Market)—contains a shop where any pen enthusiast should head.
Despite its name, the Groentenmarkt has had many functions over time. Until the 17th century, when the Groentenmarkt was still a fish market, fish were supplied on flat barges at the three arches by the Great Butchers’ Hall. On the Lys side of the hall, you can still see these arches. The Groentenmarkt even spent some time playing the role of execution yard.
