Predictions are that 2020 will mark significant shifts in the travel and tourism industry. Fuelled by technology and innovation, we are on the brink of a completely new travel era. Recent years have been all about finding the perfect Instagrammable destination, but, as a growing number of travellers seek a slower, more meaningful and deliberate way to travel, changes are afoot.
Travellers are expected to swap overcrowded, mainstream destinations for unique, unknown places. There’s also a tendency to invest in experiences they can learn from and which will not have a harmful impact on host destinations.
With a whole new generation of travellers coming of age (Gen Z – now aged 10 to 25), there is mass awareness of climate change. The devastating fires raging in Australia and other recent natural disasters are putting the spotlight on the fragility of our world and the terrible impact humans have on the planet.
This growing awareness of our contribution to climate change will be the single biggest catalyst of a transformation in travel behaviour. It is also driving innovation through technology like never before.
These changes will come in different shapes and forms – all driven by consumer demand.
Technology will come to the fore
