If you see Melissa McCarthy’s name in the cast list for a film or TV show, then it’s basically a guarantee that you’re going to be doing some proper belly laughing.
Given her natural humour, it’s unsurprising that the actress started out as a stand-up comedian before landing her breakout role as Sookie St James in Gilmore Girls in 2000. After its seven-year run, she took on a titular role in Mike & Molly in 2010 and won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series. The trophy didn’t stay lonely for long, with a second Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress on Saturday Night Live following shortly behind.
Melissa soon turned her hand to the big screen, taking on a core role in Bridesmaids at 41 years old, which became an instant classic. Lines such as, “I’m glad he’s single because I’m going to climb that like a tree,” and, “It’s coming out of me like lava,” on the famous food poisoning scene, earned her an Oscar nomination.
