When we chat to Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan about their new film Ammonite, it’s clear there is a huge amount of chemistry between the actresses.
In fact, the pair credit each other for feeling “safe” and “comfortable”, making their love scenes very easy to perform.
The film is set in Lyme Regis, Dorset, and Kate, 45, plays palaeontologist Mary Anning, who blazed a trail in terms of her fossil findings in 1840s England. Saoirse, 26, portrays married geologist Charlotte Murchison, who Mary falls in love with.
The actresses threw themselves into their characters, with Oscar-winner Kate admitting that she cut herself off from the rest of the cast in order to get into the zone. The mum-of-three, who’s married to Richard Branson’s nephew Edward Abel Smith (also known as Ned Rocknroll), even says she got addicted to fossil hunting!
Here, Kate and Saoirse tell OK! how knowing what women want helped them to tackle the roles...
You two clearly have great chemistry. Had you met before you started filming?
Kate: We had met each other before and we knew a lot of the same people. So building our friendship was quite natural. It was seamless. I think we were very lucky.
Saoirse: We actually interviewed each other a few years ago and we did this photoshoot together. I had a good sense of how she worked and I knew we were quite similar. I’m not as organised as Kate. Kate takes organisation to a whole new level. There’s a lot of stickers involved!
Were you nervous about filming sex scenes together?
