The Grammy winner opens up about the intense feelings and hard-won wisdom that inspired her second album.
Lorde was only 16 when she wowed the music world with her debut album, Pure Heroine, and its mesmerizing single “Royals.” She’s done a lot of living in the four years since, and she’s poured it all into her follow-up, Melodrama, an ode to heartbreak, solitude and freedom. “I went inward and wrote about what I was going through,” says the New Zealand native, born Ella Yelich O’Connor. Chief among the turmoil: breaking up with her boyfriend, photographer James Lowe, 27. She talks about spreading her wings.
Why did you call your new album Melodrama? Is that a word that describes your life?
