Exposing your child to vernacular texts early in life has various cognitive benefits. But if you have struggled to find beautiful, engaging books that can pique her interest, these are the publishing houses you should turn to.

IN NEW DELHI, Nishant Bachkheti, 34, and Amit Dixit, 40, have a common woe regarding children’s books. Bachkheti, a finance professional and father to Rhea, 4, and Kavya, 18 months, complains, “We have lots of beautiful boardbooks, touch-and feel books and gorgeously illustrated books for the girls—but all in English. The only time we tried to find something in Hindi, we struggled to read it to them and had to paraphrase most of the book—almost dumb it down!” Dixit, a media professional and father to Rhea’s 4-year-old friend, Anant Mayukh, agrees: “Just look at the badly drawn illustrations. I cannot fathom why books with really good artwork are actually unaffordable.”

Both say they rely—too much, perhaps—on foreign publications as a result. And they fear the children are missing out.
