In 1972, archaeologists excavating a necropolis (large cemetery) in southeastern Europe made an amazing discovery.
They uncovered a huge trove of gold jewelry, as well as other gold objects, all dating back to the fifth millennium b.c.e. The expertly crafted objects came to be known as the Varna Gold, because they were found near the present-day city of Varna in Bulgaria.
