Staying on track

Did a mixture of post-Christmas guilt and a few too many Proseccos on New Year’s Eve lead you to one of the most popular resolutions of all time – exercising more? Here’s our edit of Berkshire’s latest fitness clubs and classses

Staying on track

Let’s be honest, keeping your fitness resolution is far easier said than done, something former GB athlete Gemma Weetman knows only too well. Gemma’s venture into sports began at age nine after she excelled at her school’s cross country running and decided to join her local athletics club.

“I definitely didn’t start at my best, no-one does,” Gemma laughs. “But with training and dedication, I received my first international representation for Great Britain in 2006 whilst competing in France and Switzerland. After I medalled in both, my life as an international athlete began.” Gemma’s devotion to athletics has taken her on quite the journey, from the tracks to academia as a sports lecturer, and now into her current role as a personal trainer and sports massage therapist.

It’s clear to see that Gemma has a very positive fitness philosophy and is keen to share that enthusiasm with others. “If you want to be more active, but don’t know where to start, then have a think about what you enjoy or used to enjoy when you were younger,” Gemma advises. “And if you’re completely unsure then start off by trying out free taster sessions, different classes or gyms until you find an environment that you feel good in.”

When it comes to keeping a resolution, what would Gemma suggest? “Be organised and definitely book your session in advance if possible,” she says without hesitation. “This helps to create a routine so that exercising becomes as habitual as eating breakfast or going to work.” Gemma also suggests writing it down in your diary. “You then have a clear set time to go and do something active for yourself.”
