The benefits of owning pets are innumerable. Whether you need to walk the dog, feed your cat or check your fish tank filter, they offer us everything from companionship, purpose and a reason for many to get out of bed in the morning.
The thought, therefore, of moving into retirement living without your beloved pet can make an already hard transition even more difficult to stomach. What many don’t realise, however, is that there are plenty of places that are not only happy to welcome you in with open arms, but also your furry, scaly or feathered friend.
“It’s so sad for people to think because you’ve got older you can’t have that pet with you when you’ve got too much to offer each other,” Donna Tucker, senior administrator at charity The Cinnamon Trust, tells me. This is why the nationwide charity works with elderly and terminally ill people who require help with their pets.
