Secrets Of The Ouse

Running from Lower Beeding to Newhaven this Sussex river passes through one of the county’s prettiest villages and quirkiest towns

Secrets Of The Ouse

Back in the Middle Ages, as the dividing line between East and West Sussex, the Ouse was called the Mid-wind, a name later swept away by “ooze” or “ouse”, meaning water. Locals, however, prefer the theory that “ouse” is a corruption of Aqua de Lewes.

Today, the associations with the cross-Channel port of Newhaven and East Sussex county town Lewes make it easy to consign the river to the “developed and increasingly built-up” category. This ignores the many pleasingly quiet pastoral sections that the Ouse offers us, which can be explored energetically with oars and paddles, or as anglers, walkers, cyclists or mere viewers.

The Ouse springs to life near Lower Beeding. Tributaries, including the Uck, join the river at Isfield and then at Barcombe Mills Southern Water make reservoir use of the flow. Several oxbow lakes lie in the river’s meandering wake.
