April marks the start of the festival season on the Yorkshire coast, and those in Scarborough couldn’t be more different to Whitby’s, highlighting the diversity of what’s on offer on the coast.
Scarborough’s annual literature festival, Books by the Beach (April 11th-15th) takes place at venues around the town. This year’s cracking line-up includes Churchill’s biographer Nicholas Shakespeare, Yorkshire vet Julian Norton, writer and bibliophile Lucy Mangan, chair of last year’s Hull City of Culture Rosie Millard and Lionel Shriver, author of the international best-seller We Need to Talk About Kevin.
Sci-Fi Scarborough returns to the Spa (April 21st and 22nd). Now in its fifth year, this cosmic event promises a ‘cathedral of creativity’ with contributors including leading cosplayer Luna Moon, comic book artists Sonia Leong, Richard Piers Rayner, John McCrea, contortionist Pixie Le Knot (Kayla in Game of Thrones), Star Trek actor Dominic Keating and the latest incarnation of R2-D2, Jimmy Vee, who recently replaced the late, great Kenny Baker in the Star Wars movies.
