Guru Poornima is a celebration for seekers; actually it should be the seekers poornima.

Guru Poornima 2018

So there is a beautiful story. Long long ago, there were a group of seekers who wanted a teacher so they went in search for a Guru. First they went to Brahmaloka, to Brahma. In Brahmaloka, there was lot of music, intellectual knowledge and Brahma was very busy doing a lot of creative things. Innovation, creativity, music, dance and all of this was there in Brahmaloka and Brahma was immersed in it. So these four seekers who went there, stayed for a little while and then they got fed up. They said,‘this is not my place, and this is not my Guru.’ They were looking for something higher.

So next they went to Vishnuloka. Vishnuloka is a place of wealth. Vishnu was busy maintaining the whole creation. He was taking care of the good ones and punishing those who are wicked and he was also busy doing all the organising stuff. So Brahma was only creating and the maintenance department came to Vishnu and there was a lot of work. Maintenance is much more difficult than creation. People can create but maintenance needs a lot more effort. So there were all the management techniques and there was wealth and also there were guards. And these simple sincere seekers were stopped by guards. So the seekers said,‘this is not my place, and this is not my Guru.’

Then they go to Shivaloka – Kailasa. There, they find all sorts of specimens and all kinds of people. There are some who are meditating, some yogis. Here there was ego. You know, the ego of renouncement is much bigger than the ego of achievement. If you renounce then you behave like the king of the world. So there were renounciates, monks and great siddhas. And Shiva was very busy with his family. In his family there was a lion, cow, snake; all opposites. So these people went there and said, ‘No, even Shiva is no good for us. He is not going to give us anything.’
