Whether you’re a chilli addict or prefer the milder taste of sweet peppers, there’s a capsicum variety to suit all needs – and now is the time to get sowing, says Kris Collins
THEIR ornamental looks, varied flavours and heat levels are just a few reasons why chillies and peppers are top of my sowing list every spring. Each year I grow my favourites (‘Padron’, ‘Numex Twilight’, ‘Scotch Bonnet’ to name a few) but I’m always on the lookout for new types to try.
My search for the latest launches took me to the Mr Fothergill’s trial grounds last summer. There were over 100 hundred varieties on test across two poly tunnels, but it was the quality of each and every plant that really caught my eye. Aiming for the same results myself, I tracked down trials manager Brian Talman for some insider tips.
