Hoyland didn’t enjoy a major London show in his old age, nor did Bellany or Davie. in all three cases, mr Hirst has corrected, albeit posthumously, a massive institutional oversight. the Hoyland exhibition apparently did a power of good to the painter’s public standing. this show should follow suit. all three artists were forceful individualists and international, who disdained parochialism and fashionable concessions.
The Bellany-Davie pairing makes art-historical sense. Both were born on the Firth of Forth— Bellany in a fishing village, Davie in an industrial port—and they admired each other’s art. most importantly, Bellany was crucially influenced by Davie.
