There's nothing quite like dreaming about your next holiday. And although the thought of saving might seem daunting after the financial squeeze that’s January, it’s also true that it’s never too soon to start.

Whatever kind of holiday you’re keen on – whether it’s an island getaway or a local-is-lekker trip exploring more of SA – here are some budgeting and cost saving tips to help you make it a reality.

THINK OF IT AS FUTURE SPENDING

Our mindset around saving is important, says psychologist and financial planner Brad Klontz, who suggests looking at it as “future spending” as opposed to saving or depriving yourself of something.

“I think the entire concept of budgeting is flawed,” Klontz says. “Your emotional brain responds to the word ‘budget’ the same way it responds to the word ‘diet’. The connotation is deprivation, suffering, agony and depression.”
