Just six months after signing with Bidvest Wits, Steven Pienaar has left the club – but he’s not hanging up his boots just yet.
HIS arrival at the Premier Soccer League (PSL) in August last year garnered support for defending PSL champions Bidvest Wits, who beat Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns to secure his signature.
But former Bafana Bafana captain Steven “Schillo” Pienaar (35), who joined Wits at the start of the season on a oneyear contract, has now parted ways with the team just six months later – leaving everyone with one question: what’s next?
On 2 January, his former team revealed they reached an amicable agreement with Pienaar to terminate his contract.
Schillo, who wouldn’t be drawn on his move, left the Clever Boys languishing at the bottom of the PSL log.
According to his close friend and former Bafana Bafana player Jerome McCarthy, Pienaar was dejected by the move. “He was disappointed but it’s football, my man. He was disappointed with himself for failing to show South Africans the good football that he has shown the people in Europe.”
