ESSEX IS A county awash with history, culture and commerce – so much so that its largely rural nature is easily overlooked. Take the time to scratch a little below the surface though, and you’ll unearth a world of wildlife, rare and special habitats, and natural heritage to rival anything the bright lights and big cities have to offer.
According to TripAdvisor, Essex is home to no fewer than 137 ‘Nature and Parks’ attractions. That’s 137 places to go and reconnect with your wild side! But that actually sells Essex short when it comes to the number of wild and natural places it has hidden away. Essex Wildlife Trust and the RSPB between them manage nearly 100 nature reserves around the county. If you were so minded, you could visit a different nature reserve every week and it would take you nearly two years to get around them all.
