‘A world of the unknown'

Mel Giedroyc is relishing her quest to find the UK’s most skilled carpenter as the host of C4’s latest reality show Handmade: Britain’s Best Woodworker.

The six-parter, which started last week, sees contestants carving, whittling and building their way through a series of challenges to impress the experts, Helen Welch, founder of the London School of Furniture Making, and prizewinning architect Alex de Rijke.

This week, the eight remaining hopefuls must work on a miniature scale to construct dolls’ houses with the potential to become collectors’ items – all in just two days!

After shaking the sawdust out of her hair, Mel, 53, joined TV Times to tell us why it’s a dream job...

What appealed to you about being on this show?

I just loved the whole idea of it and said ‘Yes’ straight away! I love the idea of bringing a craft to telly that maybe hasn’t really been seen in this way before and the show just felt very different.
