Naples crime saga Gomorrah spreads its wings…
On a Saturday morning in June, an ornate residence just off Oxford Circus is playing host to Gomorrah’s fourth season. It’s the first time this hugely popular Italian crime drama about the Savastano clan has shot in London. “We want to show that ‘Gomorrah’ is a cancer that’s everywhere,” says Salvatore Esposito, who plays rising felon Gennaro ‘Genny’ Savastano. “It’s not just in Naples… it’s everywhere.”
Today, seeing the Gomorrah gang decamp to Britain isn’t the only surprise. Turning up on set is comedian Ricky Gervais. He tweeted that the Neapolitan show is “up there” with The Wire, The Bridge and The Sopranos; then he and Esposito started chatting. “When he knew that we were here, I talked with him on Twitter,” says the Italian star, “and he said, ‘OK, I want to come on set.’”
