They've survived splits, breakdowns and the unsolved murder of DJ Jam Master Jay, but Run-DMC are still causing hard times for sucker MCs

WITHOUT underplaying anticipation for Run- DMC’s welcome return to the UK this summer, the intensity n levels are unlikely to match those of their initial visit, in May 1987. Back then, Joseph ‘Run’ Simmons, Darryl ‘DMC’ McDaniels and DJ Jason ‘Jam Master Jay’ Mizell were the biggest stars in hip-hop. Supported by the Beastie Boys in the first flush of bratrap notoriety, their arrival was front page news, while their gig at Brixton Academy was heralded as one of the shows of the decade.

“I was on such a high that it was all a blur,” says Run. “There were a lot of promoters, a lot of newspapers, a lot on my plate to eat. Did I like it? Yeah, but it was a lot for a young mind to have so much attention. We went out and performed, did what we were supposed to do, and tried to find peace in the middle of it.”

'I'll Tell You The Full Story…'
