From Coronation Street’s fiery Karen McDonald to troubled GP Gemma Foster in Doctor Foster, Suranne Jones has made her name playing strong women. But 19th-century lesbian landowner Anne Lister in BBC1’s true-life drama Gentleman Jack is her most spirited character to date.

The eight-part series, set in the 1830s and based on the real Anne’s diaries, sees her defy the customs of the period by running her own Yorkshire estate, Shibden Hall, as well as conducting intense romances with a range of women.
