AT ROUGHLY 1.30am Sam-mi Wiles was stepping back into her apartment, a small place she’d never really got around to furnishing. Her arrival awakened the cat, Morris, who was the only other living being in the house. Well, that’s if you didn’t count the plants. Sammi did.
She’d read an article about the benefits of having plants in your home according to the Chinese art of feng shui and even though she didn’t really believe in it she’d decided it was better to be safe than sorry.
So, slowly Sammi began to fill up her flat with plants.
She wasn’t particular about which plants either. There were tiny aloes, delicate lilies and even orchids with flashy flowers.
Sammi would place them in colourful pots and in every nook and cranny.
The plants ensured the air was thick with the scent of vanilla and jasmine.
Not that Sammi would ever admit it, but they made her feel as if she were taking a brief respite in a jungle.
Sammi’s parents would never have approved.
Just as they’d made no effort to conceal their dislike of her so-called “quirky” vegan diet, Sammi’s mom and dad would have openly hated what she’d done to the place.
It was for reasons such as this that Sammi hardly ever had her parents over for dinner. Not to mention that trying to cook something that suited everyone would be a herculean task in itself.
Thankfully, Sammi’s friends were far more tolerant of her lifestyle. In fact, it was just this evening that she’d been out enjoying a healthy vegan-friendly meal with them.
What Sammi hadn’t expected was discovering that the restaurant also offered vegan-friendly beer, which was quite a rarity and thus impossible for her to turn down.
Especially after her friends had been topping up their own drinks every so often.
