IT’S a topic that’s been front of mind for royal-watchers since Harry and Meghan quit The Firm: how exactly will the pair support themselves now they’re no longer on the queen’s payroll?
Stripped of their HRH titles, they now find themselves out in the big bad world with a family to support and bills to pay – although with their A-list celeb credentials they aren’t likely to battle.
They’re all the rage right now anyway, so it’s unlikely we’ll be seeing Harry punting the pleasures of a glass of milk to a Chinese TV audience, for instance. A tad tacky, no? Not, it seems, if you’re his cousin Peter Phillips. The 15th in line to the throne raised more than a few eyebrows recently when he starred in an advert extolling the virtues of Jersey milk. And he’s not the only one with blueblooded connections to proudly proclaim their lactose tolerance.
A few days later it emerged Lady Kitty Spencer, another of Harry’s cousins, had also jumped on the milk cart with an endorsement of her own, purring approvingly about the benefits of the creamy beverage. Why? Because it’s good money. The queen’s grandson and Princess Diana’s niece have both reportedly bagged tens of thousands of pounds for starring in the ads.
Someone else has been punting their pedigree to make some moolah too.
Sarah “Fergie” Ferguson plans to launch a lifestyle brand called Duchess Inc that will sell everything from branded jams, biscuits and tea to jewellery and homeware. The 60-year-old ex-wife of Prince Andrew is said to be shopping around for potential investors to help fund her £10 million (R190m) dream.
CRITICS say commercial ventures such as these do the aristocrats no favours.
