“I was 14 or 15 when I discovered this Bulgarian traditional dress book. My mum [had] bought it for me, and I really connected to those images,” says Emma Chopova, one-half of Chopova Lowena, a brand predicated upon Bulgarian craft techniques and textiles that has fast become a wardrobe fixture across an array of milieus. The industry’s style arbiters have worn them to fashion week. British singer-songwriter Celeste donned one of their outfits for her performance on the The Graham Norton Show. K-pop darlings Itzy sported the brand in their “Wannabe” music video. It’s not hard to see why — the London-based label’s outré yet feminine patchwork silhouettes juxtaposed with unexpected leather waistbands and carabiners, are amongst the freshest propositions to arise from fashion’s young blood in recent years.
