Yvette King is curled up on the couch in her living room and I find myself mirroring her, feet up and tucked close to the body. Her kids, 10-month-old fraternal twins Valentina and Vivienne, have just been scooped up and whisked upstairs by her husband Ben King. Disclaimer: they weren’t kicking up a fuss of any sort — there was just no way Yvette and I could focus long enough to have our intended conversation with the girls around. Vivi has this inexplicably effervescent energy that commands the room, and Vale’s large, dreamy eyes are every cliché you’ve read about. Yet they’re the reason why I’m over at her place on a Saturday morning. Since Yvette — born and raised in Sydney — launched her career as a TV presenter here in Singapore, the limelight has been very much hers and hers alone; as the red-carpet interviewer to celebrities like Dwayne Johnson and Naomi Campbell, as well as the unflappable, goal-oriented individual who chased down her dream of hosting E! News Asia after 10 years. But recently, the 36-year-old Korean-Australian’s narrative has welcomed a new chapter, and a quick scroll through her Instagram handle will give you its Cliff’s Notes.
“I have been open about the fact that it wasn’t a straight line to motherhood for me. I had endometriosis, and also a miscarriage.” She continues, of the experiences and tidbits of information she’s been sharing, “It took me a very, very long time to actually articulate some of these things, but I don’t want to create somewhat of a false image of how [pregnancy] was for me.”
