A friend of mine taught me a little trick to check out the pedigree of the tableware you are eating off. You gently lift the plate up ever so slightly to the side and you take your knife and slide it beneath the plate as a mirror to see the crest or label beneath. Elegant, discreet and a chic way to find out without resorting to asking the host or god forbid, turn the plate upside down in polite company.
