Continuing their journey to introduce the sarong to the world, Lovi Ceylon launched their new collection to much acclaim at TexWorld Paris during the Paris Fashion Week. While in Paris the Lovi Ceylon show was witnessed by Jean-Paul Donald-Potard a childhood friend of Jean Paul Gaultier who joined forces with the iconic designer to set up a global fashion empire. Jean-Paul Donald-Potard was so taken with the silhouette of the sarong and Lovi Ceylon Founder, Asanka De Mel’s vision, that a visit to Sri Lanka to explore a possible collaboration between the two is on the cards. Asanka De Mel is dogged in his determination to make the sarong an outfit of choice for not only Sri Lankans but for gentlemen around the world. By showcasing his collection in Paris, Lovi Ceylon is one step closer in their journey to global domination.
Q & A
How did the trip to Paris materialize?
LOVI was invited by the Export Development Board of Sri Lanka to present a collection during Paris Fashion Week, to showcase local design and capabilities.
With guidance from the Fashion Design Council of Sri Lanka and other such organizations, the EDB is looking to promote local brands with a Sri Lankan signature. LOVI’s design evolutions to the classic sarong fit well into that initiative. We also did the show to honor our fans and further expand our circle into Europe
Which show did you take part in?
The show is called TexWorld Paris, a massive trade fair of world fabric and clothing makers meeting with potential buyers and partners. The event is held twice a year in Paris to coincide with Spring/ Summer and Autumn/Winter fashion collections.
What range of clothing did you show?
We showed new additions to the Modern Ceylon collection, along with some signature looks like the Tuxedo and Leather check sarongs: The new sheer sarongs and nautical sarongs were big hits on the Paris catwalk.
What was the atmosphere like?
It was like being a kid in a candy store to see all the fabrics and elements that we could incorporate into our designs. The four-day fair was filled with thousands of exhibitors and visitors.
What was the backstage like?
Efficient and exciting! It was four days of shows from designers all around the world. I suspect there were over 20 segments.
How was the reception from the audience?
