Revered As Comedy’s Queen Of Cool And Admired For Her Innate Ability To Avoid The Hollywood Spotlight, Rose Byrne Reveals Life Is Chaotic—but That’s Just Fine
Calling from a New York taxi on a cold afternoon following a vocal training session at the esteemed The Juilliard School, actor and cool girl Rose Byrne is winding down and headed home to partner Bobby Cannavale and boys, Rocco, three, and Rafael, one. Best known for comedic film roles in Bridesmaids, Bad Neighbours and Instant Family, the 39-year-old takes a moment to talk feminism, film, family and how she navigates flying under the Hollywood fame radar.
INSTYLE: You’ve been in the industry for a long time, starting out at age 13. How have you stayed so grounded?
ROSE BYRNE : “[Laughs] I’ve had my moments, don’t worry! I think probably because I have been doing it for so long it works in my favour. I’ve been around the rodeo, so I’ve seen the highs and lows. I think it serves me more to stay grounded rather than to get too caught up. I definitely was on the other side...having seen more things about the business from a young age, and being more cautious about this feeling of success or fame....I feel like it’s okay to go slow and steady, and to say let’s just see what happens.” You launched your all-female production company, The Dollhouse Collective, here with your girlfriends in 2015.
Do you enjoy producing?
“Yeah, it’s a big part of the reason I wanted to start the company and be beside my friends. It’s exciting to source material, find an article, develop or buy it or put a bid on a book. It’s more about being at the wheel, you know, instead of in the back seat and that’s exciting.”
And what exciting projects do you have coming up?
