Girlhood is the idée fixe of Shushu/Tong, the emerging Chinese label whose frilly, bow-clad creations have found a new home in Dover Street Market Singapore. Liushu Lei, one half of Shushu/Tong, shares how he and fellow designer Yutong Jiang conjure their visions of off-kilter femininity
What made Yutong and you decide to come together and start a label?
I have known TongTong for a long time since high school, kind of like forever. We went to the same BA and MA courses, and we were flatmates. When I decided to start a brand, I talked to TongTong and I found that we have so much in common. It is always better for two people to work together than one.
Why did you choose to base your label in Shanghai instead of London, where you graduated?
It was a natural decision. We did our BA in Shanghai and most of our friends live there, so after graduation, we went back to start our brand.
