Discreet isn’t usually the term used to describe how Filipinos celebrate the holidays. No, we like to be grand, over the top. Our champagne must come with sparklers, the food more than we can handle. We’re also loud—from the decorations to the carols sung in the street. But things are very different this year, no thanks to the pandemic. The mood is bluer, pitched a few notes down the scale of merry.
Like we’ve done so many times this year, it’s time to revisit our reasons for doing. Over the years, many of us have gotten lost in the glitz and drunk merriment of the season, failing to understand its essence, how it brings people together in love and harmony. Now is perhaps the best time to celebrate Christmas—from gifting to decorating and dining—with an understanding of how our choices impacts other people. This doesn’t mean, of course, that we should simply forget about having fun and relishing its pleasures. It’s a merry Christmas after all. Even if we’re serving only the essentials this year, we can still serve them using the best silver and finest china.
