Fresh off the success of Hugo Spring/Summer 2019, Hugos menswear head Bart De Backer gives us a lowdown on the resurgence of 90s fashion and what makes the collection so relevant today.
It’s 1am on a cool summer night in Berlin and I just had a bratwurst. On a scale of one to 10, I’d rate life at a solid 10 – things are kinda awesome right now. Judging from the large, excited crowd of Europe’s fashionable elite and members of the media on the grounds of Motorwerk Berlin tonight, I probably wouldn’t be wrong in surmising that this is the general consensus of the moment. Allow me to backtrack: we’d gathered for an exclusive first look of the Hugo Spring/Summer 2019 collection (the menswear line comprising loose-fitting silhouettes and casual cuts, in addition to slouchy suit jackets and athletics-inspired pieces, had been inspired by the heydays of the 90s), but had gotten a lot more than we’d bargained for (some highlights included a unique rave-like show featuring fashion luminaries like Presley Gerber on the catwalk, as well as a surprise performance by American rapper Wiz Khalifa to kick start the after party).
In order to make sense of it all, we talk to Bart De Backer, Head of Hugo menswear, for a rare insight into the Hugo S/S 2019 collection.
